Manuel Olivares Lapeña (born April 2, 1909 in Son Servera , † February 16, 1976 ) was a Spanish football player and coach .

Player career

Olivares was born in Son Servera in the Balearic Islands . In his childhood he moved with his family to San Sebastián and from then on went through the youth teams of Real Sociedad . In 1928 he signed his first professional contract with the second division club Deportivo Alavés .

In 1930 Olivares rose with his club in the Primera División . His debut in the top division of Spain took place on December 7, 1930, the first day of the 1930/31 season . Alavés met Real Sociedad of all places. Olivares scored two goals and the game ended 2-2. The Spaniard played a total of 14 games and scored ten goals.

For the 1931/32 season Olivares moved to Real Madrid . With the Royal , he won two Spanish championships and the Copa del Rey . In addition, he was the top scorer with 16 goals in the 1932/33 season .

In 1934 Olivares left the Spanish capital and returned to Real Sociedad . At the end of the season, however, he rose with the club after extremely mixed results in the Segunda División . For the 1935/36 season he finally moved to the second division Real Saragossa and henceforth worked as a player- coach . With Saragossa he immediately succeeded in promotion to the Primera División . The Spanish Civil War then paralyzed gaming operations.

After the war, Olivares moved to Hércules Alicante . There he also worked as a player-coach. After an uneventful season in the Primera División, he joined the second division CD Málaga in 1941 . In 1943 he ended his career at Algeciras FC .

In total, Olivares played 82 games in the Primera División and scored 54 goals.

National team

On June 14, 1930 Olivares played his first and only international match for the Spanish national team against Czechoslovakia . The game was lost 2-0.

Coaching career

After quitting his football boots, Olivares decided to pursue a career as a coach. He benefited from the fact that he had already gained experience as a player-coach. He was still denied major successes. In 1945 he was promoted to the Segunda División with UD Salamanca . The following year, however, they were relegated again. In 1951 he led UD Puertollano for the first time in the club's history in the Tercera División , which was then the third highest Spanish division. After further brief engagements, he ended his coaching career in 1954.
