The Primera División 1979/80 was the 49th season of the highest Spanish football league . It started on September 8, 1979 and ended on May 18, 1980.

Real Madrid became Spanish champions for the 20th time. The decisive factor was Real Sociedad's only defeat of the season on the penultimate matchday. Real Madrid took over the championship lead by one point.
