history
The AD Almería association was founded in 1971 in the Andalusian city of the same name. After the newly established club played its first year in a regional amateur league, it was classified by the Spanish Football Association for the 1972/73 season in the then third-rate Tercera División. In that same division, AD Almería acted in the following five years, with the table positions fluctuating between the region of promotion and region of relegation. The Tercera División 1976/77 one finished in third place, whereby one was eligible to start for the newly created Segunda División B, subsequently the third Spanish division. There things went very well for the AD Almería team, they were first in Group 2 with three points ahead of FC Algeciras at the end of the 1977/78 season and were promoted to the Segunda División. AD Almería was able to establish itself there immediately and took a surprising first place in its first second division season, tied with CD Málaga and one point ahead of Betis Sevilla , which made it possible to celebrate promotion to the Primera División, Spain's top division in football. The team of coach José María Maguregui could also positively surprise in the Primera División and at the end of the 1979/80 season reach an excellent eleventh place in the table, with seven points before the first relegation place, occupied by Rayo Vallecano .
After the successful relegation Maguregui resigned as head coach of AD Almería, his successor was Arsenio Iglesias . Under this, the team around captain Juan Rojas could not retrieve the previously shown performance and rose as bottom of the Primera División 1980/81 back in the second division. With this descent began the decline of AD Almería. Also in the second division season 1981/82 one was only eighteenth, which resulted in the direct march from the first to the third division. There were also financial problems that ultimately led to the dissolution of AD Almería in the summer of 1982.
Seven years after the end of AD Almería, a new football club was founded in the Andalusian city. This was called UD Almería and, like its predecessor, managed to promote the Primera División in the 2000s. Currently, UD Almería can be found in the second class Segunda División.
