Arsenio Iglesias Pardo (born December 24, 1930 in Arteixo , A Coruña province ) is a former Spanish football player and active coach .
Career as a player
As the youngest of nine brothers in a farming family, he started his football career in 1951 at Deportivo La Coruña in the Primera División with a game against FC Barcelona , in which he promptly scored a goal, for which he apologized to then goalkeeper legend Antoni Ramallets . From 1951 to 1957 he was part of the so-called década de oro (golden decade) of the team from A Coruña and was the audience under the nicknames o mago de Arteixo (the magician of Arteixo) and o zorro de Arteixo (the fox of Arteixo) a Term. In 1957, the coach of CF Sevilla at the time , Helenio Herrera , brought him to the Andalusian capital. After only one year he left CF Sevilla and played eight more years until he finally ended his career with Albacete Balompié in 1966 .
Career as a coach
In 1967 he started his coaching career with the 2nd team of Deportivo La Coruña . In 1970 he became the coach of the first team of Deportivo La Coruña after the club management had dissolved the contract with Roque Olsen . He immediately made it to the Primera División. He did the same with Real Zaragoza in 1978 and again with Deportivo La Coruña in 1991, after the team had spent 18 years in the Segunda División , Segunda División B and Tercera División . From the 1992/93 season his greatest coaching successes should begin with the team that was commonly known as Super Depor and consisted of players such as Bebeto , Mauro Silva , Miroslav Đukić and Fran . He was runner-up twice (1993/94 and 1994/95) and in 1995 he won the Copa del Rey , the first real title for Deportivo La Coruña. In the year he won the title, he ended his coaching career at Deportivo La Coruña, but returned to club football as a coach in 1996, replacing Jorge Valdano, who was dismissed in the middle of the season , at Real Madrid until the end of the season. In 2005 he and Fernando Vázquez took over the coaching positions in the Galician football team .
