Fernando Vázquez Pena (born October 24, 1954 in Castrofeito , Galicia ) is a Spanish football coach who has coached numerous Spanish club teams. In addition, from 2005 he coached the Galician football team .

Coaching career (club)

The beginnings

Fernando Vázquez originally worked as an English teacher in Lalín . Through school sport he came into closer contact with football for the first time, which led him to his first club as a coach, the Tercera División - Club CD Lalín . In his first season as coach, he led the Galicians for promotion to the Segunda División B . After three years there it went back to the fourth division, but in 1990/1991 Vázquez and his team succeeded in promotion.

Segunda Division B

In the summer of 1991 Fernando Vázquez left his club despite promotion and went to the fourth division and traditional club Racing Ferrol . With Ferrol, he was promoted to the 2B in his first season in 1991/1992. There he stayed with his team for two more years before moving to league rivals CD Lugo for the 1994/1995 season. With Lugo he only reached a disappointing midfield position, but for the first time he got the opportunity to train a team in paid football.

Professional football

In the summer of 1995 Fernando Vázquez took over the Spanish first division club SD Compostela . With the Galicians, who had to put together a usable squad with modest means, he managed to stay out of the league twice, but in the third attempt you had to go fourth from bottom in the play-offs, where you were ultimately defeated by Villarreal . Fernando Vázquez, however, was allowed to stay in the Primera División. He took over the relegation-threatened Real Oviedo . With the Asturians he ended the 1998/1999 season in 14th place in the table and achieved relegation.

In the following year, Fernando Vázquez was given the opportunity to train last year's third and UEFA Champions League participant RCD Mallorca . With the Mallorcians, however, he only achieved a disappointing tenth place in the season. At the end of the season, the coach and the club took the consequences and parted ways by mutual agreement.

Ascent and Descent

During the 2000/2001 season Fernando Vázquez took over the first division relegated Betis Sevilla . He led the traditional club to rise again to second place behind arch rivals Sevilla FC . However, he did not stay, but went to UD Las Palmas . With the financially troubled club, however, he was relegated third from bottom. For the 2002/2003 season Vázquez took over the coaching position at the first division club Rayo Vallecano , but he rose as bottom of the table with Rayo Vallecano far behind. Last but not least, he was relegated with Real Valladolid in 2003/2004.

Celta Vigo

After three relegations from the first division in a row Fernando Vázquez dared a fresh start in his Galician homeland with the first division relegated Celta Vigo . And in 2004/2005 he was actually able to lead his team to direct promotion. Only on the last day of the match could the promotion be achieved with a 2-0 win at UE Lleida . The following year he achieved a completely surprising sixth place in the league with Celta and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup . Despite participating in international business, Vázquez slipped deep into relegation battle with his team in 2006/2007 after an unprecedented negative series. In the second half of the season he was finally replaced by the Bulgarian Christo Stoitschkow , who, however, could no longer prevent relegation.

International

From 2005 to around 2008 Fernando Vázquez was the coach of the Galician national team , which was brought back to life for the first time since the 1930s .
