society

Valdano was already 19 years old when he played for the top Argentine club Newell's Old Boys in Rosario , where he stood out as a robust, ambitious striker with strong fighting skills. He was considered one of the "child prodigies" of Argentine football; European clubs had long since noticed him. Valdano also wants to leave the homeland ruled by the military junta for political reasons. In 1975 he left Argentina and went to Europe to sign with the Spanish second division club Deportivo Alavés . However, the promises made to the young striker were not fulfilled. Allegedly, the club wanted to try to transfer Valdano to a top club as quickly as possible in order to get a high transfer fee into the chronically empty coffers. However, it was four years before he was able to move to Real Zaragoza in the Primera División in 1979 . There he bribed as a threading agent and executor alike. He had arrived in top Spanish football. For a while he was toying with a move to FC Barcelona , which was coached by his compatriot César Luis Menotti , but after his dismissal, such change intentions were broken.

Instead, he moved to Real Madrid in 1984 . Although he was already 29 years old, he experienced the climax of his club career in the following years with the “Royal”. In 1985 he and his club won the UEFA Cup , which they defended a year later. In addition, Real was with Valdano in 1986 for the first time in six years again Spanish football champions . The congenial storm duo Jorge Valdano and Hugo Sánchez played a significant role in this title win . Valdano was seen by coaches and colleagues as a very helpful player for the team who thought for himself. As a result, he offended a few times, because he shared his sometimes contrary views on tactics with his coaches. However, he never questioned their authority. After the 1986 World Cup , his career took a turn for the worse. At the beginning of 1987, a kidnapped hepatitis forced him to take a year and a half off. After that he was unable to build on his achievements and ended his active career in 1988.

After the football career

After his active career as a footballer, Jorge Valdano became a coach. He led Real Madrid to the Spanish championship in 1995 and was then football director of the club until his resignation in summer 2004 . His book About Football was named "Football Book of the Year" at the 2006 German Football Culture Prize. He is also an honorary member of the Academy for Football Culture . He took the view that the commercialization of football with hundreds of millions in transfers and millions in salaries for the stars in the age of globalization in a market economy was inevitable.
