Miguel Ángel González Suárez (born December 24, 1947 in Ourense ), commonly known as Miguel Ángel, is a former Spanish football goalkeeper .
Career
Miguel Ángel began his sporting career as a handball goalkeeper in his hometown with Cardenal Cisneros , before he finally switched to the small regional soccer team AD Couto at the age of 18. His good performance soon brought him to the most important club in town, CD Ourense . In the summer of 1967, after only one year in football, he was already signed by Real Madrid , but initially loaned him to the second division CD Castellón . From the summer of 1968 he was finally part of the Real Madrid squad, but under coach Miguel Muñoz he was never able to secure a regular place, number one were first the Canaries Antonio Betancort and Andrés Junquera and later Borja Alarcón and Mariano García Remón . It wasn't until the 1973/74 season that the breakthrough came after Luis Molowny took over as coach on an interim basis in the middle of the season and put Miguel Ángel in goal. In the cup final, the Galician showed his skills in a 4-0 win against arch rivals FC Barcelona . The following year, under coach Miljan Miljanić , he finally became the squad's first goalkeeper. During his total of 18 years at Real Madrid he won twice the UEFA Cup , eight Spanish titles , five cups and a Ligacup . On June 30, 1986, he ended his career as a player.
National team
In the national team, Miguel Ángel played a total of 18 games. He was also part of the Spanish World Cup squad in 1978 and 1982 . Mostly he was in the shadow of José Ángel Iribar and later Luis Arconada .
