Santillana began his career in the youth of Barreda Balompié . In 1970 he moved to the most important club in his region, Racing Santander , where he spent a season in the Segunda División . In the summer of 1971, Real Madrid announced the signing of the then 19-year-old talent. He quickly became a fixture among the capitals, winning nine championships , four trophies and two UEFA cups during his 17 years with Los Blancos . With 186 goals, he is the fourth best league scorer in Real Madrid history, behind Raúl , Alfredo Di Stéfano and Cristiano Ronaldo .

Santillana completed 56 games for the Spanish national soccer team and scored 15 goals. He was part of the squad at the football world championships in 1978 and 1982 and at the European championship finals in 1980 and 1984 , where he and his team were only defeated in the final against hosts France .

successes

Remarkable

In 1972, Santillana threatened to end his career at short notice because he allegedly only had one kidney. For this reason, Madrid wanted to sign German striker Hans Walitza from VfL Bochum . Shortly before the contract was signed, the Real doctors found a second kidney in Santillana. Walitza's obligation was therefore dropped.
