The Primera División 1986/87 was the 56th season of the highest Spanish football league . It started on August 30, 1986 and ended on June 21, 1987. Defending champions Real Madrid became Spanish champions for the 22nd time.

The championship was played in two phases. After the usual 34 games, the teams were divided into three groups (A, B and C) of six teams each. The points from the first phase were taken over and a further round with a total of ten games was played. In group A, the master and the participants in the international competitions were determined. In Group C originally three relegated teams should be determined, but since it was decided in the course of the season to increase the league to twenty teams, a playoff was held, from which only one team emerged as a relegated team.
