The Estadio Lluis Sitjar (or Campo de Luis Sitjar ) was a football stadium in the northwest of the Spanish city of Palma on the Balearic island of Mallorca . The football club RCD Mallorca used the venue from 1945 to 1999. After that, the club moved to the newly built Estadi de Son Moix . From 1983 until the final closure in 2007, RCD Mallorca B, the club's reserve team, played its championship games here.

history

From 1916 to 1945 the club took part in the Campo de Buenos Aires . The new Estadio Lluis Sitjar was designed by the Spanish architect Carlos Garau . The venue was inaugurated on September 23, 1945 with the game RCD Mallorca against Deportivo Xerez (3-0). From its opening in 1945 the stadium was called Camp d'Es Forti until 1960, before it was named after the former president of RCD Mallorca , Lluis Sitjar Castella, in 1961 . When the stadium opened, it had a capacity of 15,000. In the early 1960s, the stadium was expanded to 31,000 seats because of the promotion to the Primera División 1960/61 . The promotion to the Primera División 1983/84 brought a further increase in the capacity to 38,000 places . In the end, the stadium had an official capacity of 18,000 seats.

In 2010, the association presented plans for a new football stadium, the Estadio Lluis Sitjar Nou, with a capacity of 27,000 seats, to be built on the same site for the 100th anniversary of the association in 2016. The demolition of the old stadium began on the club's own property in 2011. In March 2015, the city announced that 80 percent of the stadium ruins had been demolished. Only the west side is still standing. The costs amounted to 1.2 million euros .
