Rafael Gordillo Vázquez (born February 24, 1957 in Almendralejo , Badajoz Province ) is a former Spanish football player . His preferred position was initially left full defense . In the course of his career he also played a lot in defensive midfield. He earned the nickname El Caballo (the horse) because of his running strength .
Career
Rafael Gordillo began his career in the youth of Betis Sevilla ; with the Andalusians he finally made his debut on January 30, 1977 in a game against FC Burgos in the first team. In the same season, the club managed to win the Copa del Rey .
Gordillo quickly made a name for himself in Spanish football, and after eight years on the Betis Sevilla professional team, the left full-back eventually moved to Real Madrid . He celebrated his greatest successes with the capital city: they won the UEFA Cup and the championship in their first season . The latter was won by the Madrilenians five times in a row at the time, and another success in the Spanish Cup in 1988/89 .
In 1992, at the age of 35, Gordillo returned to his home club Betis, who were playing in the Segunda División at the time . With the Andalusians he achieved promotion back to the Primera División in 1994 , and after another year he finally moved to Écija Balompié , where he let his career end and currently works as a functionary.
National team
With the Spanish national team , Gordillo played the European Championship finals in 1980 , 1984 and 1988 as well as the World Cup finals in 1982 and 1986 . His greatest success here was his participation in the final at the European Football Championship in France in 1984 , where they lost 2-0 in the final against the host country.
