The Estadi Sarrià ( Spanish Estadio de Sarrià ) was a football stadium in the Sarrià district of the Spanish metropolis of Barcelona , Autonomous Community of Catalonia . It was the home ground of the Espanyol Barcelona football club from 1923 to 1997 .
history
The stadium was completed in 1923 and inaugurated on February 18 of that year. The first game on the facility was played by Espanyol and UE Sants, also from Barcelona (4: 1). It was mainly used for soccer games by Espanyol Barcelona and lasted 43,667 spectators. The facility was the venue for the 1982 World Cup . The three games of Group C (Italy against Argentina, Argentina against Brazil and Italy against Brazil) took place here. The game between Italy and Brazil was the decisive game and is called by some Brazilians The Tragedy of Sarria (“A tragedia do Sarria”).
In the mid-1990s Espanyol Barcelona ran into financial and economic difficulties and had to sell the stadium grounds. The loss of the 1988 UEFA Cup final against Bayer 04 Leverkusen is still cited as the reason for this financial misery . After that, the club got into a sporting and economic crisis and from then on could no longer meet the high requirements.
In 1992 some games of the Olympic football tournament took place in this stadium. The last game was played on June 21, 1997, the 42nd matchday of the 1996/97 season. Espanyol beat Valencia CF 3-2. In the same year, the stadium and the surrounding facilities were demolished and new, modern buildings were erected. At the time of the demolition there were strong protests in the city calling for the stadium to be preserved. For fans of the club, Sarrià is still the true home of the club today.
After leaving the Estadi Sarrià, the club used the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys , the Olympic stadium for the 1992 Summer Games. For the 2009/10 season , Espanyol moved into the new, club-owned Estadi Cornellà-El Prat .
