The Stadio Adriatico - Giovanni Cornacchia is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Italian city ​​of Pescara ; Located in the same province in the region of Abruzzo . The sports facility received its nickname in 2009; it goes back to Giovanni Cornacchia (1939-2008), a track and field athlete from Pescara. The sports facility currently offers 20,476 seats.

history

In addition to athletics , the sports facility is mainly used by the Delfino Pescara football club in 1936 as its home ground. The stadium was inaugurated on December 29, 1955 with the game Pescara Calcio against Como Calcio . It is also a center of the National Olympic Committee of Italy (CONI). The first construction of the stadium was designed by Luigi Piccinato. In the beginning it only had a grandstand ring around it and held around 10,000 spectators.

During the 1960 Summer Olympics , three football tournament games were held in Pescara.

In 1977 Pescara Calcio rose to Serie A and the facility was renovated and expanded to 34,000 seats with a second grandstand ring. By 1985 the capacity increased to 40,000 places. After the Heysel disaster , strict regulations were introduced and the number of places fell again. The stadium was intended as a replacement venue for the 1990 World Cup . In 2007 turnstiles were installed in the entrances.

It was last renovated from mid-2008 to May 2009 for the 16th Mediterranean Games in 2009 . The opening and closing ceremonies, football, athletics and handisport took place in the arena. The renovation cost around € 15 million . The main stand has been roofed over with a laminated wood construction. The press stand with 180 seats as well as the air-conditioned VIP stand were built. The first floor was demolished; but had to be rebuilt according to the old plans of Luigi Piccinato. A video system monitors the outside and inside. The natural grass has underfloor heating . There are u. a. another bar and gym .
