The Stadio Pierluigi Penzo is a football stadium in the Italian city of Venice . It is the home ground of the FC Venice football club . It was built and opened in 1913 and has been renovated several times since then. The facility currently offers 7,426 seats.
history
It is named after Pierluigi Penzo , a pilot in the First World War . It is the second oldest stadium of an Italian professional club after the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa , which was inaugurated in 1911 . In 1966, a game between Venice and AC Milan attracted a record 26,000 spectators.
For a long time, efforts have been made to replace the 100-year-old arcade with a modern new building. In the long run, the association wants to return to Serie A . In July 2016, club president Joe Tacopina declared that a new building should be built in the next few years. For this he traveled to the United States to find out more about the Red Bull Arena and the Talen Energy Stadium . In June 2017, rendered images of a stadium on the island of Tessera with 25,000 seats were released. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro gave his approval for the construction project in August 2017. The completion could have taken place in early 2020.
On July 24, 2018, Luigi Brugnaro and Joe Tacopina presented new plans and pictures of the stadium. About 12 km outside of Venice, the new stadium with 18,000 seats and a training center for FC Venice are to be built on 40 hectares . It should meet the requirements of the highest stadium category of UEFA . If necessary, the plans include an expansion to 25,000 places. The construction project includes a. a shopping center , restaurants , a four-star hotel and lots of parking facilities. The site is close to Venice Marco Polo Airport and the A4 autostrada . The Pierluigi Penzo stadium can mainly be reached by water. The planned costs of 185 million euros are to be financed privately. Construction work is scheduled to begin in January 2021. According to plans, the opening is planned for August 2023.
