The Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Italian city of Verona in the Veneto region . It is located in the southeast of the city. The football clubs Chievo Verona and Hellas Verona play their home games here. From the international airport Valerio Catullo the site can be reached by car in about 15 minutes and from the train station Stazione Centrale di Porta Nuova Verona in just under three minutes. It offers space for 182 press representatives. The field dimensions are 105 meters × 67 meters. The playing field surface consists of 75% natural and 25% synthetic turf. The south curve is reserved for fans of the home team and the north curve for fans of the visiting team.

history

The opening took place in 1963. Today it offers 39,211 places. It is limited to 31,045 visitors. The facility was named after Marcantonio Bentegodi, who promoted sport in Verona in the 19th century .

The Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi was one of the venues for the 1990 World Cup . This is where the group E group matches took place, as well as the round of 16 between Spain and Yugoslavia (1: 2 after extra time).

The idea of roofing the grandstands of the venue came from the Italian architect Leonardo Barucchello. It opened on December 15, 1963 with the game between Hellas Verona and AC Venice . It replaced the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi from 1910, which was still in use at the time and which was located in Piazza Cittadella . Until 1986 only Hellas Verona played in the stadium. 1986 Chievo Verona rose to Serie C1 and played with Hellas Verona in the same stadium. The stadium has an athletics facility, which was renovated in 2010.

Italy competed for the 2016 European Football Championship . The Marcantonio Bentegodi was also one of the possible venues . After France won the EURO 2016, plans for renovation were dropped.

New building

In November 2019, the Verona City Council decided to build a new stadium. It is to replace the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi and offer 27,000 seats. The planning should be pushed ahead in the coming months. But first we should talk to the residents. While Hellas supports the project, Chievo is against a new building. With the new football arena, the city wants to modernize the entire district and eliminate the current problems. The community should not incur any costs for the stadium. Public money should be used for schools and roads, according to Verona's Mayor Federico Sboarina. The administrative procedure that is now starting is estimated to take a year and two years are calculated for the construction. The construction costs are estimated at 121 million euros.
