The Verona airport ( ital. Aeroporto di Verona-Villafranca " Valerio Catullo " ) is an Italian airport , which is used for civilian and military purposes. It is located twelve kilometers southwest of Verona near Villafranca di Verona . There are no more airborne units on the military section to the west of the runway. The civil terminal is located in the far northeast.

Transport links

The airport is directly adjacent to one of the most important motorway junctions in Italy to the southwest . This is where the A22 Brenner motorway and the A4, which runs in a west-east direction, meet. Both of these motorways can be used to reach Verona, cities such as Trento , Vicenza , Mantua and Brescia , Lake Garda and the southern Alps .

Verona city center is connected to the airport by a well-developed road. In addition to taxis, there are shuttle buses that go to Porta Nuova main station every 20 minutes . Dossobuono train station is located just under a kilometer southeast of the terminal on the Verona – Mantua railway line . This is not considered an airport train station. The airport is to have its own connection to this railway line and thus to Verona Porta Nuova .

Incidents

  • On December 13, 1995, an Antonov An-24 ( YR-AMR ) operated by Romavia for Banat Air crashed into the ground shortly after taking off from Verona Airport due to a stall . The reason was that the machine had not been de-iced despite snowfall. In addition, it was overloaded by at least two tons. All 49 people on board were killed (see also Banat Air Flight 166 ) .
