Air Dolomiti SpALARE (Regional European Airlines) is an Italian airline of the Lufthansa Group , with business and administrative headquarters in Villafranca di Verona . Your hub is Munich Airport .

Although Air Dolomiti is 100% controlled by Lufthansa, the company has retained its independent public image and also carries out the training of its staff on its own.

history

De Havilland DHC-8-300 of Air Dolomiti in 1993

Air Dolomiti was founded in 1991 by the iron and steel group Leali on the initiative of the entrepreneur Alcide Domenico Leali from Brescia. The first flights were from Trieste to Genoa as part of interregional transport, but the following year the first flights from Verona to Munich were made. The De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Series 300, a twin-engine turboprop machine with 50 seats, was used.

In 1993, 5 custom-made ATR42-320s with 46 seats were added. In the same year, a commercial agreement was signed between Air Dolomiti and Lufthansa for the flights from Trieste to Munich.

In 1994 Air Dolomiti became "Partner of Lufthansa" with the aim of becoming the first regional airline at European level.

At the end of the 90s there was a collaboration with the other aviation company from Veneto: Alpi Eagles . In this context, the interior of the Fokker 100 from Alpi Eagles was completely redesigned according to the Air Dolomiti design. Thanks to their partnership, the two companies were able to compete with much larger airlines on the routes from Venice to Barcelona and Paris.

On November 7, 1999, the F100 of the Venetian company, which flew with the design of Air Dolomiti, suffered an accident while landing in Barcelona, but without any consequences for passengers and crew.

After several years of cooperation, Lufthansa acquired 26% of the airline's share capital in January 1999 . In the same year she received the “Customer Satisfaction Award 1999” from Arthur Andersen / Il Sole 24 Ore , an award for the dedication and efforts of the company towards its passengers.

In 2001 Air Dolomiti became the launch customer of the Bombardier CRJ-200 machines for the European market, which were also the company's first jet machines .

In July 2003 Lufthansa acquired 100% of the company and appointed Michael Andreas Kraus as chairman and managing director of the company.

In 2004, the four-engine English BAe 146-300 machine was introduced in the custom-made version with 99 seats and two years later all machines were baptized with the names of the most famous operas by Italian composers.

On January 27, 2009, the company became the Italian launch customer for the new Embraer E-190-200, usually referred to as Embraer 195 , which gradually replaced the BAe 146-300.

On January 26, 2011 Lufthansa announced the appointment of the managing director of Air Dolomiti, Michael Kraus, as managing director of Lufthansa Italia , an “Italy department” of Lufthansa under its control.

On May 23, 2011, the closure of Lufthansa Italia was announced with the end of the IATA summer flight schedule (October 29, 2011), the intention being to support the growth of Air Dolomiti in order to concentrate Lufthansa's strong presence, without leading to a fragmentation of activities.

In December 2012, the Lufthansa Board of Directors decided to cut Air Dolomiti and ordered the sale of the ATR machines. As a result, 116 employees of the ATR fleet were put on the mobility list, the total number of machines was reduced to 10.

After 11 years at the helm of the company, Michael Kraus handed over his position to Joerg Eberhart, who has been Chairman and CEO of Air Dolomiti since September 1, 2014.

In 2017, an eleventh machine was added to the fleet, namely an Embraer 195 with 120 seats, which previously belonged to the Lufthansa CityLine . In the following years, two more Lufthansa CityLine aircraft were introduced, which is why Air Dolomiti had 13 aircraft at the time.

strategy

Air Dolomiti was part of Lufthansa Regional , a group of German regional airlines that Lufthansa had acquired and controlled. Although the other companies in the group all used the same design and were administered by the same management, Air Dolomiti has retained its “identity” by flying with its own design and also having a certain degree of independence in terms of operations.

Today the company operates around 450 flights a week, with destination airports in Italy and Central Europe . In 2017 the company carried over 2 million passengers, mostly business travelers.

Incidents

Air Dolomiti recorded two incidents in its history:

  • On August 24, 2008 there was a landing gear fire in an ATR 72-500 ( aircraft registration I-ADLM ) on the runway at Munich Airport, which had already been given take-off clearance. In order to prevent the collision with an aircraft on approach for landing, the aircraft was requested to abort the take-off and immediately leave the runway. The ATR 72-500 parked on taxi stop B14, where the crew noticed an increased brake temperature. The machines were evacuated and the fire extinguished. The cause of the fire was a cracked and two deformed brake cylinders on the inner wheel of the left landing gear. This damage was due to overheating.
  • On May 17, 2012, an ATR 72-500 (aircraft registration I-ADCD ) had to make an emergency landing at Munich Airport. About 15 minutes after take-off at 1:34 p.m., smoke began to form in the aircraft's cabin. Shortly before landing, a fire warning was issued for the right engine, which was then switched off. After the machine touched down, it came off the runway due to a blockage in the rudder controls, slid 90 meters over a meadow and came to a stop about 60 meters in front of the airport fence with a damaged nose landing gear. The 62 people on board, including four crew members, left the aircraft. Five passengers were slightly injured; some complained of circulatory problems. The affected runway had to be completely closed for an hour, there were delays, diversions and several flight cancellations.
