history

Development until 2008

Air One was founded in Pescara in 1983 under the name Aliadriatica . In 1995 it got its current name and started offering scheduled flights between Rome and Milan. In 1996 it carried 713,000 passengers and the airline expanded rapidly.

From 2000 to 2009 there was a codeshare agreement between Air One and Lufthansa .

In 2006, 6.3 million passengers were transported and the market share in Italy was 33 percent. Air One employed around 2,800 people at the time and generated a profit of around 7 million euros on sales of 611.5 million euros. Two years later, long-haul traffic began with scheduled flights to Boston and Chicago , and Miami was added in winter .

Realignment under the CAI

The re-establishment of the insolvent Alitalia by private investors, supported by the Italian government in 2008 , led to the fact that the activities separated from the "old" Alitalia were taken over together with Air One by the holding company Compagnia Aerea Italiana, which was created for this purpose . Air One brought almost its entire fleet into the "new" Alitalia, which was initially in the previous Air One livery but under Alitalia's flight numbers on the new common route network. The machines were successively repainted or, in the case of the Boeing 737, retired.

Since the beginning of 2010, a significantly smaller Air One has also appeared again under its own name as a subsidiary of CAI as a so-called Smart Carrier . With a price and service structure that is based on low-cost and traditional airlines, a new base for point-to-point traffic was opened at Milan-Malpensa Airport (where Alitalia had closed its hub ) , and initially five Airbus A320s -200 stationed. Its biggest direct local competitor was the British low-cost airline easyJet . Lufthansa Italia , which was also in direct competition with Air One, ceased operations at the end of October 2011.

After restarting in Milan-Malpensa, Air One opened a second base in Pisa in July 2011 , another in Venice in May 2012 , and a fourth base in Catania in October 2012 .

In August 2014 it was announced that Air One would cease operations in autumn 2014. The bases in Catania, Palermo and Venice will close on September 30, while the remaining stations in Milan, Verona and Pisa will cease operations on October 30.

Destinations

Air One mainly served holiday destinations in the European Mediterranean region , including Ibiza and Rhodes as well as Prague and Tunis . Some destinations were also offered from Pisa and Venice. Gatwick was served from Milan . Medium and long haul flights were no longer operated.

Trivia

  • In addition to its English meaning, the airline's name also has an Italian meaning if it is written or read in one word. Airone is the Italian word for heron , which can be found in stylized form on the vertical stabilizers of Air One aircraft. Her callsign HERON also means heron.
  • The airline Airone, founded by the Aero Club Cagliari in Monserrato in early 1947 , which was taken over by Avio Linee Italiane in 1949 , should not be confused with today's Air One.
