The Compagnia Aerea Italiana , just CAI , is an Italian consortium which the activities of the insolvent airline Alitalia has taken over. These were separated and merged in a new airline under the umbrella brand Alitalia .

In September 2014, the successor company Società Aerea Italiana was founded, in which Etihad Airways holds a 49 percent stake. Alitalia - Società Aerea Italiana started operations on January 1st, 2015.

history

The CAI was founded as part of the Alitalia rescue plan on August 26, 2008 on the initiative of the Italian bank IntesaSanpaolo and Roberto Colaninno . On September 18, 2008, the CAI withdrew its offer regarding the troubled Alitalia; nevertheless the society did not dissolve. On September 27, 2008, CAI and Italian trade unions reached an agreement on the framework for future employment contracts.

After October 15, 2008 was primarily intended as the start of work for the CAI, this date was finally postponed to December 2008. The airline hoped that this would remove the normative and labor law problems and be able to increase its financial resources to one billion euros despite the financial crisis .

On October 28, 2008, the conversion of the Srl into a stock corporation (SpA) and a capital increase of 1.1 billion euros were resolved at a shareholders' meeting.

On January 12, 2009 Air France-KLM took over 25 percent of Alitalia CAI for 323 million euros . In January 2014, Poste Italiane acquired an 18 percent stake in Alitalia CAI as part of a capital increase , while the major bank Intesa Sanpaolo doubled its stake to 22 percent, reducing that of Air France-KLM to around six percent.

In September 2014, CAI and Etihad founded the new company Società Aerea Italiana (SAI), which has been operating Alitalia since January 1, 2015. CAI holds 51 percent of SAI through MidCo SpA, Etihad 49 percent.
