Roberto Colaninno (born August 16, 1943 in Mantua ) is an Italian manager and entrepreneur.

He began his managerial career at the auto parts manufacturer FIAMM , where he later became a member of the board of directors. In 1981 he founded Sogefi , which is active in the same industry, in his hometown and built it up into an internationally active group.

In September 1996 Colaninno was appointed CEO of the financially troubled Olivetti Group. Under his leadership, the company was restructured and strategically realigned as a telecommunications holding company with majority stakes in Omnitel (later dissolved in Vodafone ) and Infostrada (later dissolved in Wind ).

After the restructuring of Olivetti was fully completed, Colaninno launched the largest ever daring takeover attempt in Italy to date , purchasing Telecom Italia for a total of 60 billion euros . Following the successful completion of the fully leveraged takeover , Olivetti held 51 percent of Telecom Italia via a complex nesting, whereupon Colaninno became CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Telecom Italia and Telecom Italia Mobile (also TIM ). He held these functions until July 2001, when Colaninno sold his stake in the now heavily indebted former monopoly company to an equally highly complex structure surrounding the Pirelli Group controlled by Marco Tronchetti Provera . The sale, carried out under uncertain circumstances, brought Colaninno a billion dollar profit. The Italian tax authorities found the transaction illegal, for which they sentenced the Colaninno-controlled box company Bell to pay 1.937 billion euros.

In September 2002, together with other partners, he founded the holding company Omniainvest SpA ". Two months later, he acquired a controlling majority with this company in the listed real estate company IMMSI SpA and became its chairman . The real estate business was added to the real estate business as a second pillar. This led in October 2003 for the acquisition of a 31.25 percent stake in the Piaggio Group.

Between 1997 and 2002 Roberto Colaninno was also a member of the board of directors of the employers ' organization Confindustria . He was also the Cavaliere del Lavoro ( Knight of Labor applicable) and 2001, he was from the University of Lecce the honorary doctorate conferred in "business and commerce". Colaninno is a director of the Mediobanca investment bank and Efibanca

On December 7, 2006, he was sentenced in the Bagaglino / Italcase case by the Tribunale di Brescia to 4 years and 1 month imprisonment for bankruptcy with the benefit of creditors . The appeal process is currently ongoing. On December 11, 2006, the IMMSI Board of Directors suspended him from his duties as a result of the judgment . The Board of Directors of Mediobanca suspended him from December 19, 2006 to January 24, 2007 from his advisory role.

In summer 2008 Colaninno was appointed President of the newly founded CAI ( Compagnia Aerea Italiana ). This is expected to take over the operational business of Alitalia as the new airline .
