history

Mediobanca headquarters in Milan

The Mediobanca was founded shortly after the end of the Second World War by the Banca Commerciale Italiana (now Intesa Sanpaolo ) and Credito Italiano (now Unicredit ) with later support from Banca di Roma (now Capitalia and now also Unicredit). The new credit institution was intended to help rebuild and reorganize Italian industry. Since the legal situation in Italy at that time did not allow universal banks and the banks differed mainly according to the type and duration of financing , a decision was made in favor of a special credit institution for medium and long-term industrial financing . In this way, the first and most important investment bank in Italy was born. Until the complete reorganization of the Italian banking landscape at the end of the 1990s, Mediobanca played a central role in Milan's financial center. The co-founder and head of the bank, Enrico Cuccia , was for many years considered the gray eminence in the Italian economy. Mediobanca's business activities under his direction were not always characterized by particular transparency. In recent years, a changed shareholder structure and a new management board have brought about a profound change in business conduct. In the course of these modernizations, the bank expanded its activities to other areas.

Mediobanca has offices in Frankfurt am Main, Istanbul, London, Luxembourg, Madrid, Mexico City, Moscow, New York, Paris and Rome.
