The company was founded under its current name at the end of the 1950s as a division of the Italian mineral oil and energy group Eni , but dates back to 1940. In 1969 the company became independent from the Eni group and was later listed on the stock exchange. Eni currently holds around 30 percent of the shares in Saipem (as of June 2019)
Company history
The roots of the company, which first traded under the name Saipem in 1957 , go back to 1940, when SAIP (Società Anonima Imprese Perforazioni) was founded. At that time it was headed by Alfredo Giarratana , the former chairman of Agip from 1929 to 1932 and one of the Italian pioneers in oil production. SAIP works mainly as a drilling company. In 1943 the majority of the company was taken over by Ente Nazionale Gas and in 1949 work began for Agip. Ente Nazionale Gas was dissolved in 1953 and Eni was founded, which took over the entire shares of SAIP. In 1955 they started working abroad for the first time. In France they worked with Intersomer and in Somalia with Agip.
On December 31, 1957, Saipem was created through the merger of SAIP and SNAM Montaggi , the plant construction company of SNAM . At that time, Enrico Mattei managed the company with Carlo Zanmatti and Raffaele Girotti . In the first two years after it was founded, 740 kilometers (km) of gas and oil pipelines were laid, laying the foundation for the large Italian pipeline network, which today is around 27,000 km in length.
In 1958, the first refinery abroad was built in Lebanon and only one year later, the first offshore well in Europe was drilled by the Saipem Scarabeo 1 . The well known as Gela Mare 21 was located 1.5 km from the coast at a water depth of 20 meters (m). In the same year, the first wells were carried out in Patagonia (Argentina) and in Zagros (Iran) and a pipeline was built in Iran.
The “Gatto Selvatico” drilling platform, at that time a major development step for Saipem , was completed in 1960. In May 1961 the Gela field was further developed with a new platform and five boreholes were carried out. On July 31, 1962, Saipem was incorporated as an operational part of SNAM in addition to the areas "Progetti" and "Laboratori Riuniti, Studi e Ricerche". December 10, 1965 was brought into being by Agip and SNAM SNAMPROGETTI for the planning and commissioning of plants in the petroleum industry. This marked the start of a large number of projects such as refineries and pipelines. In 1966, Agip gave up its operating drilling business with all its facilities and personnel to Saipem . In the same year, offshore projects in the Persian Gulf with the “Gatto Selvatico” in the Bargain-Sar , Now-Ruz and Rostam fields are started. On September 1, 1969, Saipem was converted into a public company and has been trading as Saipem SpA ever since
In 1970 assembly work began with the construction of an oil terminal on the Bargain-Sar field. In 1972 a 32- inch pipeline was laid in the Gulf of Gaeta at a depth of 320 m and in 1974 the " Castoro Sei ", a pipeline laying ship for deep water, was constructed. In the same year, a 10-inch pipeline was also laid through the Strait of Messina . The contract to build the “Marun-Esfahan” pipeline through the Zargos Mountains was signed in 1975. Also in 1975 Saipem laid the heaviest offshore pipeline off Abu Dhabi . The 48-inch pipeline weighed 1,082 kilograms per meter. In 1976 a record was set for the repair of a pipeline in the Strait of Sicily at a depth of 560 m and a year later a record was set for the laying of a pipeline at 608 m in the same region.
The company also built the Transmed pipeline from Algeria to Italy. The project, also known as the “Enrico Mattei Pipeline”, began in 1980 and consisted of three 20-inch strings. In 1985 Saipem was first listed on the Milan and Paris stock exchanges .
The semi-submersible drilling platform "Scarabeo 5" was completed in 1990 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente . The ship was specially designed for sub-arctic climates and began drilling in the North Sea along the 62nd parallel. In 1994, the Transmed was expanded to include two more lines, each 26 inches. From the Italian competitor Micoperi , which had to file for bankruptcy in 1990, the deep-sea work ship M 7000 was finally acquired in 1995 and renamed Saipem 7000 .
In May 2002 Saipem acquired Bouygues Offshore s. a. and in 2009 the sale was Acergy Piper of Acergy completed at Saipem. The ship operates today under the name Castoro 7 .
