The Castoro Sei is a work ship for the largest Italian offshore service provider Saipem , a former subsidiary of the energy company Eni . The ship, which was built between 1975 and 1978 by the Italian shipyard Italcanteri in Trieste , sails under the flag of the Bahamas and is used as a sea-going pipeline ship.

Structure and technology

Hull and drive

Like many large work ships in the offshore industry, the Castoro Sei is designed as a semi-submersible ship , which means that she is able to vary the draft by controlled flooding of ballast tanks. The draft, which is around 9.5 m at the overpass, is increased to 15.5 m for work, which increases stability . The working deck is located around 30 m above the lower edge of the two floats to which it is connected via ten columns.

The Castoro Sei uses a diesel-electric drive for locomotion and positioning . The ship is powered by four pivoting propeller pods ( Voith radial propellers ) with a total output of 8240 kilowatts (kW), which draw their electrical energy from eight generators with 4500 kilo voltampere  (kVA) each . The generators are driven by eight diesel engines with a total output of 23,600 kW.

Twelve 25 t anchors are used for anchoring, which are attached to 3000 m long steel cables with a diameter of 76 mm. The anchor winches achieve a pulling force of 124 t.

Pipeline laying and other equipment

The pipelines are laid using the S-Lay method and are possible up to a diameter of 1.5 m (60 inches). The three tensioners achieve a pulling force of 110 t each. The welding, the testing of the weld seams by means of non-destructive material testing and the coating of the weld seams with plastics take place on up to nine work stations .

Accommodation and helicopter deck

The living module offers space for 330 people. The accommodation complies with international safety standards and, in addition to the cabins, offers relaxation areas, offices, an infirmary, a cafeteria, a cinema and a fitness center. The helicopter deck is approved for helicopters up to the size of the Sikorsky S-61 .

Technical specifications

  • Working deck height: 29.8 m
  • Total load capacity of the deck: 3,600 t
  • Storage area for pipelines: 1,195 m²
  • Other deck area: 1,525 m²
