Company history

Micoperi was founded in 1946 as a salvage company to clear shipping lanes of shipwrecks that sank during World War II . After activities in the Mediterranean subsided, the company played an important role in clearing the Suez Canal .

In the late 1980s, the company ran into financial problems with the decline in orders caused by the low oil price . The company was then restructured and Micoperi was forced to sell many of its large ships, such as the Pearl Marine and the Saipem 7000 , the second most powerful floating crane in the world.

In 1996 Micoperi was taken over by the Protan Group , which is also based in Ravenna. Protan has been one of the main contractors for the Italian energy company Eni since 1962 .

In April 2009, the company received wide international media coverage when the tug Buccaneer (Eng. "Privateer") was hijacked. The Micoperi tug was on its way from Singapore to Suez when it came under the control of Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden on April 11, 2009 . The crew of the 75 m ship consisted of ten Italians, five Romanians and one Croat. The ship's crew and the ship itself were finally released on August 10, 2009.

Salvage of the Costa Concordia

In April 2012, a consortium made up of Titan Salvage and Micoperi was awarded the contract to rescue the Costa Concordia , which ran into a reef off the island of Giglio in January 2012 and consequently went aground off the island. Due to the location of the wreck in the national park directly in front of the island, the ship should be erected on site with the help of floating bodies and transported away in one piece. The recovery is the largest operation of its kind ever carried out. The costs are expected to amount to around 400 million euros.
