The Saipem 12000 is a deep -Bohrschiff (Engl. Ultra-deepwater drillship ) that the largest owned by Italian offshore service provider Saipem SpA is. With its ability to drill up to 12,000  feet (about 3,600 m) deep water, it is one of the most powerful drilling vessels in the world. The name of the ship is derived from this data.

Like the Saipem 10000 , the Saipem 12000 has the capability of "Extended Well Testing" (EWT), with which, among other things, the long-term availability of the source can be confirmed and the volume of the reservoir can be determined, But it surpasses it in its performance when drilling.

History, structure and technology

The Saipem 12000 was built at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in Koje ( South Korea ) and completed in 2010.

Hull and derrick

The ship is 228 m long and 42 m wide. It was measured with 60,538 GT and displaced over 96,000 tons.

The draft can be varied depending on the requirements: During the voyage it is around 8.3 m and when drilling in DPS mode due to the absorption of ballast water it is up to 12 m.

The derrick is approximately 60 m (200 feet ) high, approximately 24 m deep and 18 m wide at the base, and 18 m deep and 6 m wide at the top. It carries a static load of 900 t.

Energy supply and drive

Energy is generated by six MAN diesel engines (type: 16V32 / 40 ) with an output of 8,000 kW each, which were built under license by the Korean company STX. They are coupled with generators from ABB (type: AMG 0900 XU10 ) with 8,750  kilovolt amperes (kVA). This provides a total electrical output of up to 52,500 kVA.

Part of the electrical energy is used for the diesel-electric drive of the Saipem 12000 , which uses six Rolls-Royce propeller nacelles to drive and position , each of which is powered by a 4,500 kW electric motor.

Accommodation and helicopter deck

The living module offers space for up to 200 people. The accommodation complies with international safety standards and, in addition to the cabins, offers two relaxation areas, a cafeteria, sauna and fitness center. The helicopter deck is approved for helicopters up to the size of the Boeing-Vertol CH-47 .

Calls

In February 2018, the ship was deployed off the coast of Cyprus on behalf of the Italian energy company ENI . There it should search for natural gas around 50 km southeast of the island. However, six Turkish warships prevented the Saipem 12000 from approaching the area. This led to diplomatic clashes between the EU and Turkey. Turkey argued that it was protecting the rights of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (which it only recognized) .
