The Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) is an Italian credit institution that mainly finances projects of public interest . CDP has been a public limited company since 2003, 82.77% of which is owned by the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Italian State. 15.93% are held by 66 bank foundations .
history
The institute was founded in Turin in 1850 as a depository. On the basis of a new legal regulation, it also financed projects of public corporations from 1857. After the unification of Italy in 1861, comparable institutions of the old Italian states were gradually taken over. In 1898 the CDP was fully integrated into the Ministry of the Treasury as a general directorate (department). In 1983 the company was again made independent in the legal form of an institution under public law . In 2003, as part of the transformation into a stock corporation, a number of foundations were also involved in Cassa Depositi e Prestiti .
Business areas
The CDP grants investment loans to corporations under public law , in particular to local authorities . In these cases, government-guaranteed postal savings deposits serve as a refinancing source . In addition, it grants private companies long-term, low-interest financing, especially for infrastructure projects or research projects of strategic public interest. It also supports small and medium-sized businesses . The administration of state holdings is also important. The activities of the CDP are, among other things, subject to the supervision of the Italian Parliament .
