Gruppo Riva is an Italian steel group headquartered in Milan .

history

Riva & CSAS was founded in 1954 by the brothers Emilio (1926–2014) and Adriano Riva. The company produced iron and steel products from scrap , which Emilio Riva had begun in the post - war years of the Italian reconstruction after the Second World War.

Steel production began in 1957 on the outskirts of Milan in the " Caronno Pertusella " industrial area , when the first electric arc furnace under the company " Acciaierie e Ferriere Riva " (= Riva steel and iron works) made its first tap to produce its first slab for rolled steel producers .

The first three-line continuous casting system was developed at the Caronno works by Emilio Riva in collaboration with engineer Enzo Colombo and industrial plant builder Luigi Danieli . The development of continuous casting reduced manufacturing costs and enabled Acciaierie di Caronno to survive during the 1964 recession that spelled the end of many competitors.

With the takeover of the " Acciaerie e Ferriere del Tanaro " in Lesegno in 1970 and the " Seii " in Malegno , steel production was significantly increased and enabled Riva to enter the Italian market for long products, profile , bar and reinforcing steel .

At the end of the 1960s, the Riva Group, with 8% of the mini steelworks, had a total annual production of approx. 300,000 tons, which offered a wide range of long products. An important element of the Italian steel industry is the concentration of a large number of mini steelworks in the Brescia area , which mainly process scrap as a raw material.

With the entry into the Spanish "Siderurgica Sevillana" in 1971, the group made significant foreign investments for the first time , which began with a small share and was completed with the takeover in 1988 and exported mini steel mills outside the EC . Up until then, the company had only produced reinforcing bars and in 1977 diversified into steel bars. In 1980 the steel production of the Riva group reached 1.1 million tons annually, with which 61% of the Italian, 28% of the Spanish and 11% of the French market were accounted for by Riva and 670,000 tons of rolled products were produced.

Riva diversified with the acquisition of “ Officine e Fonderie Galtarossa ” in Verona , which specialized in round bars and wires . Within five years, production increased fivefold with the addition of new high-quality products, such as welded structural steel for the construction sector.

With the takeover of “ Acciaierie di Cornigliano ” from Ilva SpA , which until then was led by the COGEA consortium, in which the Italian state was the largest shareholder via IRI , an integrated steel mill in Italy was privatized for the first time . Riva doubled its steel production in Italy and reached an annual production of 3.2 million tons in 1989, of which 2.1 million tons was accounted for by its Italian and 1.1 million tons by its Spanish and French steelworks. Of this total production, 2.2 million tonnes were rolled steel products, which already accounted for 10% of total bar production in the EU .

In 1977 the " VEB Quality and Stainless Steel Combine Brandenburg " received a know-how transfer from the Riva Group through the intermediary of the plant manufacturer Danieli . When the Treuhandanstalt dissolved the combine and in March 1992 privatized the electric steelworks and the wire mill of “ Brandenburger Elektrostahlwerke GmbH ” and the electric steelworks of Hennigsdorfer Stahl GmbH , Riva took hold of it, thoroughly modernized the plants and increased production within a few years.

In 1994 production in the Riva Group reached 5.8 million tons, of which 5 million tons were rolled steel products in the five countries, making Riva one of the major European steel producers.

With the acquisition of " Ilva Laminati Piani SpA " - today Ilva SpA, the state-owned IRI completed the privatization of the iron and steel industry in Italy. Riva completed its product range of stainless steel in both flat and long-rolled steel products and aimed for synergies both in Italy and abroad.

In the meantime, Riva has also acquired the majority of " Hellenic Steel " in Saloniki , Greece , which operates a cold rolling mill and produces coated products.

The “Ilva Servizi Marittimi” with 13 ships for the transport of ore and scrap also belongs to the Riva Group .

In 2000, Riva took over the " SAM " group from Usinor , in which the electrical steel interests of the French group with locations in Neuves-Maisons , Vauvert , Montereau and Lampertheim were combined.

In 2004, the Riva Group, with an annual production of 16.65 million tons, 25,000 employees and sales of almost € 8 billion, was in 4th place in the ranking of European steel manufacturers and 11th in the world.

In June 2013, by government decree, the Letta government appointed Enrico Bondi as administrator for the rehabilitation of the Taranto steelworks. In the same month, the company was organizationally split into ILVA SpA and Riva Forni Elettrici SpA . In 2014 rumors arose that ArcelorMittal would take over ILVA with the Taranto steelworks.
