Neuves-Maisons is a French commune with 6729 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Nancy , is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Neuves-Maisons and the seat of the Moselle et Madon community .
geography
The place is on the Moselle about ten kilometers from Nancy . From 1958 to 1979 the river from the mouth near Koblenz to Neuves-Maisons was made navigable in the course of the Moselle canalization . The last Moselle barrage and the northern end of the Canal des Vosges are also located here . Neuves-Maisons has an area of 4.44 square kilometers and is 217 to 360 meters above sea level.
history
From 130 inhabitants in 1616 a place with 2377 inhabitants developed in 1901. A little later in the century Neuves-Maisons quadrupled its population. Although the mine in the Val de Fer (Eisental) has not been used since 1966, the steelworks is still the town's landmark today.
