geography
Saxon-Sion is located in the Saintois region , about five kilometers south of Vézelise .
history
The area was the settlement area of the Celtic tribe of the Leukes . The Gallo-Roman name of the area was Pagus Seuntensis , the place was called Seuntum , from which Scionsz and finally Sion became.
Saxon-Sion is located on the northern end of the "holy mountain of Lorraine", the Colline de Sion ( Hill of Sion ). Originally a Celtic place of worship, Mary , the mother of Jesus , was venerated on the hill from the 4th century onwards . Crusaders are said to have named the hill Zion .
On the hill are the Basilica of Our Lady of Sion ( Monument historique ) and a 45-meter-high tower on which a 7-meter-high statue of Mary rises.
The hill of Sion inspired the writer Maurice Barrès to write his novel "La colline inspirée" (1913). A column on the hill commemorates the writer.
