Vaudémont is a French commune with 63 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). The place is located in the canton of Meine au Saintois (until 2015: canton of Vézelise ) in the arrondissement of Nancy and belongs to the municipality of Pays du Saintois .

geography

The place is located in the Saintois countryside in the southwest corner of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department , about 30 kilometers south of Nancy . The hill of Sion ( Colline de Sion ) with the 541 m high Signal de Vaudémont is visible from afar .

Remains of the Vaudémont castle

The castle of Vaudémont was in the 11th century for the counts of Vaudémont built. Only a part of the curtain wall and the donjon are preserved. The donjon is called Tour Brunehaut , "Tower of Brunichild ". Building materials from a building from the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD) were used in the construction of the donjon . Repairs were carried out on the structures in the 15th century. In 1639 the castle was built on the orders of Louis XIII. looped. In 1840 the ruin was classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) and in 1930 the donjon was restored.
