Hoensbroek is part of the municipality of the city of Heerlen and is located in the southeast of the Limburg province in the Netherlands . On January 1, 2017, the municipality had 19,171 inhabitants.
history
Hoensbroek (originally called Gebrook in Limburg and Broek in Dutch ) was a small village until the 20th century. In 1388 it was separated from the dominion of Heerlens and knight Herman von Hoen, a progenitor of the Limburg noble family Hoensbroech, was awarded . The place was later named Hoensbroek after the Hoen family.
Hard coal mining
In the first half of the 20th century, the region around Kerkrade , Heerlen , Hoensbroek, Brunssum , Eygelshoven and Schaesberg became the center of Dutch coal mining . The region was also called "Oostelijke Mijnstreek" (there was also a "Westelijke Mijnstreek", which was formed by the municipalities of Beek, Schinnen, Stein and the then independent municipality of Geleen).
The Staatsmijn Emma coal mine existed in Hoensbroek from 1911 to 1973 . At times it had the highest net production in the Netherlands. The mining industry led to rapid population growth .
Until 1982 Hoensbroek was an independent municipality, then it was incorporated into Heerlen.
traffic
Hoensbroek is on the Sittard – Herzogenrath railway line and has its own train station. The best way to get to the place by car is to take exit no. 5 (Nuth / Hoensbroek) of the 76 motorway ( European route 314 ), which is about 3.5 km from the center of the village.
Attractions
The Kleine St. Janskerk and the Grote St. Janskerk face each other on the market square .
The hoensbroek castle , whose origins lie in 1250, received its present form in the 17th century mainly. Until the end of the 18th century, it was the ancestral seat of the Counts of the Hoensbroech family and is now the city museum.
Close to the castle is the Drakenmolen (dragon mill), a historic mill that was mentioned as early as the 14th century and now houses a veterinary clinic.
