Jef Penders , actually Joseph Gerardus Johannes Penders , (born October 21, 1928 in Hoensbroek , Province of Limburg ; † April 15, 2015 in Maastricht , Province of Limburg) was a Dutch composer and conductor .

Live and act

At the age of 8 Penders received music lessons at the music school in his hometown Hoensbroek and played E-flat clarinet in the wind orchestra. During the German occupation, the brass orchestra's musical instruments were kept in safekeeping and safe with his parents. Penders took advantage of this and learned the trumpet , trombone and saxophone almost autodidactically . Later, when his parents rented living space to a well-known guitar teacher, he also learned to play the guitar . After the war he played in bands of the United States Army for a year and arranged some works.

From 1949 Penders studied counterpoint , instrumentation , conducting , organ and vocal pedagogy at the Maastricht Conservatory . He then worked for a few years as a conductor and music teacher. He composed utility music for his own and other orchestras, including the Metropole Orkest , the Malando Orchestra (alias for Arie Maasland ), the Royal Military Band, the Royal Navy Music Corps, the Amsterdam Police Band, the Orchestra of Belgian Radio and Television under the baton from Francis Bay .

In 1959 he moved to Maastricht and became cantor at the great St. Lambertus Church . Apart from composing, his other professional activities came to an abrupt end after a very serious illness in which he lost his language skills in 1971. With the help of technical aids, he finally managed to communicate verbally to a limited extent. Most recently, he lived in the Valencia area , Spain, for a number of years .
