Arie Maasland (born May 26, 1908 in Rotterdam , Netherlands , † November 22, 1980 in Bussum ) was a Dutch composer and musician of the genre HaFaBra music and dance music. Many of his works were published under the stage name Malando .

Life

At the age of six Maasland received piano lessons from Jan Kriek. After completing his HBS training   , Maasland began studying architecture as a draftsman . But soon he switched to music. As a student, he founded an orchestra . Later he was director of the ensemble "The Jumping Jacks", a sextet in which he played from 1933 to 1939 as an accordionist and percussionist . He also wrote compositions and arrangements for this sextet, noting that the audience was particularly fond of tango . He soon created his own tango style. His Opus 4 is a tango with the title “Olé Guapa”, which he wrote spontaneously for his wife while she was waiting when she was shopping for the day. It became a catchy tune and a classic of tangos.

In 1939 he founded his own orchestra, which premiered on July 1, 1939 in Leeuwarden in the dance cabaret of the “Spoorzicht” hotel. During the Second World War , he and two other orchestra members were able to escape from a transport to the Amersfoort transit camp . After the liberation, the orchestra was able to perform again, but in the first few years Maasland also performed together with Jan Gorissen as the accordion duo "Malgori". A contract with VARA in 1946 increased the orchestra's reputation and the triumphal march lasted from 1947 to 1960. During this time there were countless tours through Europe, the Dutch East Indies and from 1960 also through Japan. In 1968 Maasland took a trip through Argentina , the motherland of tango. On May 23, 1979, he finally said goodbye to the public with a VARA television show.

His complete oeuvre includes around 150 compositions. He wrote for orchestras, wind bands and other media. Maasland has received many awards, such as in 1959 in Pavia , Italy, with the Oscar Mondiale for best accordionist, in 1964 with the Edison Award and two years later with the "Golden Harp" of the Conamus Foundation. In 1973 he received an award from the Dutch royal family.

Maasland had been married to Johanna Cornelia van der Star (called 'Annie') since October 31, 1934 , with whom he had the daughter Lia . The grandson, Danny Malando , is a well-known film composer and director of a tango orchestra, who prefers to play the works of his grandfather.
