The Hogereburgerschool (also: Hogere Burgerschool ; short: HBS or hbs ; literally in German  : "Higher Citizens School" ) was a type of school in the Netherlands and the Dutch colonies at that time , comparable to an earlier high school in Germany, from 1863 to 1974 . as an educational institution of secondary education .

It was part of the pre-university training (now called VWO for Dutch Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs ; literally in German: "Preparatory scientific instruction"), which usually comprises six years between the ages of 12 and 18.
