Jos Kuipers

Jos Kuipers (born December 10,  1961 in Hoensbroek ) is a former Dutch basketball player .

career

As a teenager, Kuipers played basketball, soccer , handball and swimming . His basketball club career began at Nepomuk St. Jan. As a 16-year-old, he made the leap into the men's team. Kuipers began studying sports.

In 1980 he moved to EBBC Den Bosch , the same year he made his debut in the senior national team. In 1983 Kuipers won the Dutch championship with Den Bosch, and at the end of May / beginning of June 1983 he took part in the European championship in France with the national team. In the same year he made university teams in the United States attention when he played friendly games with the Dutch teams in the United States. In 1984 he repeated winning the championship title with Den Bosch. The 2.04 meter tall winger left his home country in 1984 and went to Fresno State University in the US state of California for the 1984/85 season . By 1986, the Dutchman played 53 games for Fresno State and scored an average of 10.9 points and 5 rebounds per encounter.

At the 1985 European Championships in Germany , Kuipers was the best Dutch scorer with 14.7 points per match. A knee injury suffered in the 1985/86 season prevented Kuipers  from trying to make the leap into the NBA professional league . During his time in America, the Dutchman took part in charity games in which he also played against NBA players including Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson .

From 1986 Kuipers was again a member of EBBC Den Bosch in his home country after his trip to Nice, France, had ended after several weeks of participating in team training. In the summer of 1987 he was the  second best thrower of the Dutch at the European Championships in Greece (14.9 points / game) behind Rik Smits . In 1987, 1988, 1993, 1996 and 1997 he won further championship titles with Den Bosch. He also took part with the team in the European Cup, Kuipers, known as a good three-point thrower, caused a sensation in spring 1988 when he scored 41 points in the competition against the French representative EB Orthez and hit seven of his eleven three-point throws in the course of the game.

In June 1989 Kuipers took part in his last European championship, with 12.8 points per use he was the third best Dutch scorer there. He played a total of 109 international matches. He reached his highest point average in the Dutch league in 1994/95 with 18.5 per game. In 1998 he ended his competitive sports career.

Kuipers remained connected to basketball in his professional life. From 1993 to 1996, while still playing, he worked for the Dutch Basketball Association, where he was responsible for the 3-on-3 basketball game . In 1996/97 he was managing director of EBBC Den Bosch, from 1997 to 2003 Kuipers was responsible for clubs and youth at the sports foundation SSNB in North Brabant . From 2002 to 2014 he worked at the Brabant Olympic Training Center, where he worked as a consultant for top-class sport, among other things. Afterwards he worked again for the SSNB Sports Foundation. From 1996 onwards, Kuipers worked for the Dutch Basketball Federation as a teacher for trainer training courses and as a trainer for youth and adults at association and club level.
