Marbache is a French commune in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle in the region Grand Est . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Nancy and the Bassin de Pompey municipal association, founded in 1995 .

geography

The municipality of Marbache, with 1704 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), is located on the left bank of the Moselle , about halfway between the cities of Nancy and Pont-à-Mousson . On the left (western) side of the Moselle valley rises the elongated Côtes de Moselle ridge with a steep step over 100 meters high, which is particularly pronounced in the Marbache area . Above the stage, a plateau in the north to extend Eschtal and southwest to Terrouintal drops.

View of Marbache

On the slopes and on the heights of the municipality, which apart from the inhabited areas belongs to the Lorraine Regional Nature Park , forests spread out ( Forêt entre 2 Chemins, Forêt de l'Avantgarde ), which cover 80% of the municipality. The forests used to be part of the much larger forest area Forêt de Haye , the core of which today surrounds the city of Nancy in a semicircle.

The settlement itself extends along two axes: the old village center in a side valley that opens to the west and lies across the Moselle with dense buildings and in the narrow left bank area of the Moselle. The narrow Moselle valley is divided by traffic routes (rail, road) running parallel to the river and residential buildings on the bank slope.

In the northeast of the municipality, the A31 motorway crosses the Moselle to shorten a loop of the river - one of two Moselle bridges on the motorway between Metz and Nancy.

Neighboring communities of Marbache are Belleville in the north, Millery in the northeast, Custines in the east, Pompey in the south, Liverdun in the southwest and Saizerais in the west.

history

The origin of the name Marbache is still unclear. Mar- (French: marais) probably comes from the Celtic (= swamp or pond ). Some researchers doubt that the ending -bache goes back to the Germanic brook , because the place is at least 40 kilometers southwest of the old Romance-Germanic language border.

In old written sources the following names can be found for the place: Mahrwogicca (797 in the copial book of Gorze Abbey ), Merbechia (896 near Zwentibold ), Marbage (1181) and Marbaiche (1333).

In the 12th century a priory of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Pont-à-Mousson was built in the Marbache forest . Remains of this building called Le Ménil are still preserved today, especially the entrance portal with the inscription of the year 1141. Among other things, the monks operated a mill, which, like the entrance portal of the priory, is still remembered in the municipality's coat of arms.

In the village of Marbache, which lived from agriculture and viticulture (85 hectares of vineyards in 1888), a new chapter in history began around 1850 with the construction of the railway line from Metz to Nancy. Iron ore-containing rock was found during excavation work to fill the track bed in the narrow Moselle valley. The newly established iron ore mine supplied the foundry in nearby Pont-à-Mousson and enabled the metallurgical industry to rise there. The population of Marbache increased significantly in the years after the mine opened: while in 1841 there were 673 inhabitants, in 1881 there were already 1210 inhabitants.

Due to the insufficient iron content in the ore, the iron ore mining ended in 1957. The entrances to the former tunnels are now closed and secured.

Economy and Infrastructure

Today, Marbache is primarily the home of many commuters to the industrial parks in the Moselle valley and Nancy . There are six farms in the municipality (cereal cultivation, goat and sheep breeding). There are also smaller craft and service companies in the village.

In the community there is a medical center, a pharmacy, a hairdresser and two bakeries. Marbache is also a kindergarten and primary school location.

Marbache is on the D 667 from Nancy to Pont-à-Mousson , which follows the Moselle valley . In parallel, the A31 motorway runs with a connection immediately northeast of the municipality of Marbache. The departmental road D 907 runs through the town center from the Moselle valley in a westward direction to Saint-Mihiel in the Maas valley, 47 kilometers away . Marbache station is on the Frouard - Novéant line (as part of the Nancy- Metz line ) operated by TER Lorraine .
