The Autoroute A 31 is a 349 kilometer French motorway beginning in Beaune and ending in Zoufftgen on the border with Luxembourg .

The northern part of the A 31 (117 kilometers) is toll-free throughout and connects the cities of Thionville, Metz, Nancy and Toul, and offers connections to Luxembourg (and thus Germany and Belgium) as well as to the A 4 between Paris and Saarbrücken. The speed limits are between 90 and a maximum of 110 km / h. With up to 100,000 vehicles per day, this part of the A31 is one of the busiest roads in France. Due to the high volume of traffic and moderate public funding, the condition of the road is not always perfect. However, this has been countered in recent years with numerous improvement measures. Since this section of the motorway is an important traffic artery in northeastern France, it is notoriously congested and in poor condition, plans have been made since 1990 to create a new motorway, the A 32, to relieve the traffic. However, this project was dropped in 2010 in favor of a three-lane expansion of the northern A31.
The southern part of the A 31 (232 kilometers) is toll road all the way and serves primarily as a connection between north-east France and Dijon and Lyon, as well as the A 6 coming from Paris and connecting to the Mediterranean coast and Spain. Accordingly, traffic there is stronger during the holiday season but otherwise very weak. Since this section is located in a sparsely populated, heavily agricultural zone of France and the motorway extensively bypasses all cities along the route, it is rather monotonous - especially at night. Due to the low volume of traffic and the financing through tolls, the route is in very good condition. The speed limit is continuously 130 km / h.
toll
The motorway is toll-free from the border with Luxembourg to Toul. The toll area begins in Toul at the Gye toll station ( Péage de Gye ) and extends south to the transition to the A 6 at Beaune. Since the A 6 is also operated by the operating company APRR, there is no additional toll station there. The price for driving through the toll area starts at € 17.70.
Surname
In connection with the common practice in France of giving important motorways an additional name (e.g. “Autoroute du Soleil” for the A 6), the A 31 is called “Autoroute Lorraine-Bourgogne”, in English “Autobahn Lorraine” -Burgundy".
