Nogent is a French town with 3752 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region . It is located in the arrondissement of Chaumont and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Nogent . The inhabitants are called Nogentaises .
During the French Revolution , the name of the municipality was Nogent-le-Roi (previously Nogent-Haute-Marne ), in 1890 the name was changed to Nogent-en-Bassigny . Since 1972 the community has been called Nogent .
geography
The city lies on a plateau above the valley of the Traire , a tributary of the Marne , about 17.5 kilometers south-east of Chaumont .
history
The megaliths (dolmens) are evidence of the area's early importance. The trade route between Langres and Trier also ran through the community .
