Merrey (1793 still with the spelling Merey ) is a French commune with 100 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Chaumont and the municipal association of Bourmont, Breuvannes, Saint-Blin, founded in 2012 .
geography
The municipality of Merrey is located in the Bassigny countryside on the northern edge of the Langres plateau , eight kilometers north of the source of the Maas and 28 kilometers northeast of Chaumont . The 6.84 km² large municipal area shows a mixture of fields, meadows and smaller wooded areas. Larger forest areas can be found in the north ( Ardent Bois ), in the southeast ( Bois de Planche-Nassard ) and in the south ( Bois du Rang Pouchemin ). The highest point in the municipality is a distinctive, conical 421 m high nameless hill immediately northwest of the village of Merrey, which towers over the surrounding area by 60 meters . The Ruisseau du Grand Étang and other small rivers in the municipality flow west to the upper Meuse . Merrey is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Breuvannes-en-Bassigny in the northeast and east, Val-de-Meuse in the south and Choiseul in the north.
Place name
The Latin name Moereium (in French Mairé ) has been handed down from 1153 .

Economy and Infrastructure
In the municipality of Merrey, three logistics companies are based on the site of the large freight yard. There are also four farms in Merrey (cereal cultivation, cattle breeding).

In Merrey, the Merrey – Hymont-Mattaincourt railway branches off from the Culmont-Chalindrey – Toul railway . On the route to Mattaincourt, passenger traffic only takes place as far as Vittel . Merrey is connected to the neighboring communities by secondary roads. The A 31 autoroute runs through the municipality from Toul to Langres , a connection to this is located about eight kilometers southwest of Merrey.
