Froncles is a French commune with 1521 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Chaumont and the Canton of Vognory .

geography

Froncles is about 13 miles north of Chaumont on the River Marne . Route nationale 67 passes the municipality . The TER Champagne-Ardenne trains stop at Froncles train station .

history

Finds from the Neolithic Age have been found in the caves at Froncles. During the Celtic settlement, an oppidum arose here in the area of ​​Bruxieres. Froncles is first mentioned in a document around 1067. Bruxieres Castle was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. However, only a few remains of it have survived. In 1972 the municipalities Bruxieres-le-Froncles and Provenchères-sur-Marne were incorporated.
