Froncles is a French commune with 1521 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Chaumont and the Canton of Vognory .
geography
Froncles is about 13 miles north of Chaumont on the River Marne . Route nationale 67 passes the municipality . The TER Champagne-Ardenne trains stop at Froncles train station .
history
Finds from the Neolithic Age have been found in the caves at Froncles. During the Celtic settlement, an oppidum arose here in the area of Bruxieres. Froncles is first mentioned in a document around 1067. Bruxieres Castle was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. However, only a few remains of it have survived. In 1972 the municipalities Bruxieres-le-Froncles and Provenchères-sur-Marne were incorporated.
