history
Choiseul is the place of origin of the Choiseul family , who acquired the title of Duke of Choiseul and Duke of Praslin in the Ancien Régime . Its location on the border between France and the Empire gave Choiseul, and above all its castle on the Saint-Nicolas hill dominating Bassigny , of strategic importance. The castle was razed in 1573 after Huguenots had fled there . In 1665 Choiseul was elevated to a duchy and a peerage .
Historically, Choiseul was part of the Bailliage de Langres within the province of Champagne . The place belonged from 1793 to 1801 to the District Bourmont. It was also part of the canton of Meuvy from 1793 to 1801 and was the capital of the canton of Clefmont from 1801 to 2015 .
