Location and geography

The Bassigny lies between the Lorraine plateau and the Langres plateau in the area around the headwaters of the Maas , Amance and Marne . Larger villages around the Bassigny are Chaumont and Langres . The area is characterized by agricultural plains (mainly meadows), forest slopes and valleys.

history

The Pagus Bassianensis landscape was already known as a natural passage to Germania in Caesar's time . The Roman road ( Via Agrippa ) from Lyon via Langres to Trier leads through the middle of Bassigny.

Bird sanctuary

One of the largest bird protection areas (Zones de Protection Spéciale) in France, Bassigny , is located in the southeast of the Haute-Marne department on the border with the Vosges department. It stretches over 78,527 hectares and 69 municipalities and is located in the course of numerous bird migration routes . The main reason for the designation as a bird sanctuary were birds that are mainly in hedges, especially the red kites , whose number is still falling. Other birds, such as the woodlark and the common shrike , are also found in the bog meadows. In the forests, the aging of the tree population promotes the presence of woodpeckers and rough owls .
