Brethenay is a French commune with 368 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Chaumont and the canton of Chaumont-1 (until 2015: canton of Chaumont-Nord ). The inhabitants are called Brethenaisiens .

Brethenay is about five kilometers north of the city center of Chaumont an der Marne . Brethenay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bologne in the north and north-west, Riaucourt in the north and north-east, Treix in the east, Condes in the south and Jonchery in the west.
