Châteauvillain is a French commune with 1584 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Chaumont and the canton of Châteauvillain . The place is 20 km southwest of Chaumont on the banks of the river Aujon .

history

Châteauvillain has been a fortress since the 11th century. The castle was built around 1160 by Hugues III. de Broyes, Seigneur de Broyes et de Châteauvillain. In 1620 the (now) county of Châteauvillain was bought by Nicolas de L'Hospital , Marquis de Vitry, in 1699 Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse, acquired the county, which in 1703 was elevated to a Duché-Pairie.

Attractions

  • About 20 of the former 60 towers from the city fortifications are still preserved.
  • The Nicolas de L'Hospitals castle from 1627 was demolished in the 19th century for the construction of a road.
