Martin Bollert (born October 11, 1876 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † March 6, 1968 in Bonn ) was a German librarian and binding researcher .

Live and act

Bollert completed his studies in philosophy , German and theology with a doctorate as a philologist in order to enter the higher library service.

His first professional positions were the Krupp book hall in Essen and the University and State Library in Bonn . In 1913 Bollert took over the management of the Bydgoszcz City Library. An appointment as successor to Gustav Wahl as director of the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig did not materialize at the end of 1916, because Bollert could not agree on the modalities with the executive committee of the Deutsche Bücherei.

In 1920, Bollert received the call to take over the management of the Saxon State Library in Dresden , which had been in the Japanese Palace on the Neustadt bank of the Elbe since 1917 . Bollert was to carry out this task until 1937.

He took over a library from the establishment of a scholarly library in the 19th century. By introducing keyword and specialist catalogs along with constant information, lists of new acquisitions, guided tours and public lectures, he opened the library to broader sections of the population and made it one of the most modern academic libraries in Germany in the 1920s.

In 1935 Erhart Kästner set up the book museum under Bollert's directorate . In 1936, Bollert made it possible for Erhart Kästner to become Gerhart Hauptmann's secretary by taking him off from his duties for a year and taking leave. In 1937, Martin Bollert retired early for political reasons and for health reasons, to Oberlößnitz , now part of Radebeul , where he lived from 1925 to 1958 at Wettinstraße 22 in a country house in the style of the homeland security.

In 1945 Bollert experienced the destruction of his library and large parts of its holdings as well as the subsequent partial robbery by the Soviet troops. In 1956, at the age of 80, Bollert took part in the celebrations for the 450th anniversary of the Saxon State Library. He spent his old age in Röttgen near Bonn with one of his daughters.

Bollert's scientific work on practical library and historical topics as well as on historical book covers earned him a high level of appreciation, which was expressed, among other things, by the Goethe Medal for Art and Science in 1941 .
