Bulgnéville is a French commune with 1549 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges département in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ); it belongs to the Arrondissement of Neufchâteau and since 2015 to the canton of Vittel . Before 2015 it was the main town (chef-lieu) of the canton of Bulgnéville .
geography
Bulgnéville is located in the catchment area of the Upper Meuse in the southwest of the historic Lorraine region , not far from the health resorts of Vittel and Contrexéville . The French A 31 motorway ( Beaune - Luxembourg ) runs immediately to the west of the town .
Neighboring municipalities of Bulgnéville are Sandaucourt and Auzainvilliers in the north, Mandres-sur-Vair in the east, Contrexéville in the south-east, Suriauville in the south, Saulxures-lès-Bulgnéville in the south-west and Vaudoncourt , Morville and Hagnéville-et-Roncourt in the north-west.
history
Bulgnéville is first mentioned in 1172 as Bagneole . A settlement already in Gallo-Roman times is proven by excavation finds. A cemetery dates from the time of the Merovingians . In the Middle Ages, Bulgnéville was a fortress. Here on July 2, 1431, the Battle of Bulgnéville for the succession in the Duchy of Lorraine took place. The fortress was demolished in the middle of the 17th century.
Bulgnéville was a barony of the Des Salles family, which was elevated to margraviate (marquisate) in 1708, to which 13 localities belonged.
