Pompierre - Romanesque tympanum

Pompierre is a small commune in the French department of Vosges in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ) with 219 inhabitants (January 1, 2017). The name is derived from a medieval stone bridge ( Pont de Pierre ).

location

Pompierre is located on the Mouzon River near the border with Champagne and about 73 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of Nancy or eleven kilometers south of Neufchâteau .

history

The history of the place goes back to the Franconian times: In the year 575 (?) A meeting of the feuding half-brothers Chilperich I of Neustria and Sigibert I of Austrasia took place on the stone bridge .

In the High Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine . In 1741 the landlord of Pompierre, Jean-Baptiste de Lavaulx, had a manor house ( château ) built; but only half a century later, the French Revolution abolished all traditional and long outdated forms of manorial rule .

Attractions

  • The church of St. Martin, completely rebuilt in the 19th century, has a Romanesque portal that comes from its predecessor. In addition to the multiple recessed portal walls with richly decorated columns, the tympanum is particularly impressive : the lintel, resting on the back of two stooped and naked men, shows Christ's entry into Jerusalem ; in the arched field the Annunciation to the Shepherds , the flight to Egypt accompanied by an angel , the child murder in Bethlehem and an adoration of the kings are depicted. In contrast to the portals in Burgundy , which is not far away , the individual figures are isolated; even the facial expression shows no signs of movement. On the other hand, much attention is paid to the ornamental design of the architectural elements, the vestments, the crowns, etc.
  • The castle ( château ) from the 18th century - rather a larger manor - is located a little outside the village and is privately owned.
  • On the outskirts there is a wash house ( lavoir ) from 1824 that was also used as a cattle trough ( abreuvoir ).
  • In the area there are still some barns that have become rare in France - as everywhere in Europe.
