Relanges is a French commune in the department of Vosges in the region of Grand Est (2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Neufchâteau and the municipality association Vosges Côté Sud Ouest .

geography

Relanges, a community of 209 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), is located between Vittel and Darney , about 40 kilometers west of Épinal in the extreme southwest of Lorraine.

The municipality includes a section of the hill country of Monts Faucilles , which shows clear contours here. The terrain descends from the chain of hills running in a south-west-north-east direction in a step measuring approx. 100 meters in altitude. Coming from the higher-lying area in the northwest that goes down to the nearby Maas - Saône - watershed ranges, the streams have Ruisseau du Bois le Comte , Ruisseau de Bonneval and Ruisseau de Lichecourt dug deep into the ground, forming canyon-like valleys. At the exit of one of these gorges ( Gorges de Gabionne ) lies the Relanges settlement. The three rivers flow independently of each other into the upper Saône. More than half of the municipal area is covered by forests ( Forêt de Lignéville in the north and Forêt Domaniale de Darney in the south).

The hamlet of Lichecourt, two kilometers southwest of the core town, belongs to Relanges .

Neighboring municipalities of Relanges are Saint-Baslemont and Thuillières in the north, Senonges and Dombasle-devant-Darney in the north-east, Bonvillet and Darney in the south-east, Belmont-lès-Darney in the south, Nonville in the south-west and Provenchères-lès-Darney in the north-west.

history

Relanges belonged at the time of the Ancien Régime to the Bailiwick of Darney . In 1030 a priory of the Cluny Abbey was founded in Relanges . The Relanges monastery was founded in 1725 by Pope Benedict XII. united with the chapter Darney. The monastery church, which dates from the 11th century, later became the parish church of the village.

Attractions

The Romanesque Church of Our Lady ( L'église Notre-Dame ) was built in the 11th century. The lower pillars of the veranda, the gable of the facade and the cellar walls of the north aisle are still preserved from this period. The transept, tower and apse date from the 12th century. After a fire in the 16th century, a new nave was built and the tower was renewed and raised. A new south portal was also added. The sacred building is classified as a monument historique .

Next to the church, a lavoir and two old wells have been preserved in Relanges . A piece of rock with statues of the twelve apostles ( Belle Roche ) carved into the stone in the forest above the village also attracts many visitors. In the district of Lichecourt there is a castle from the 16th century, which was expanded in the 18th century with a chapel and a pavilion.
