geography

The municipality of Parey-sous-Montfort is about seven kilometers north of the spa town of Vittel . A wooded high plateau surrounds the village like a horseshoe along the 400 m altitude mark. The streams in the municipal area of 7.04 km² drain south-west to the Vair , a tributary of the upper Meuse . Parey-sous-Montfort is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Gemmelaincourt in the north, Domjulien in the east, They-sous-Montfort in the southeast, Vittel and Saint-Remimont in the southwest and Belmont-sur-Vair in the northwest.

history

During the Ancien Régime , Parey-sous-Montfort was part of the Bailiwick of Mirecourt . The suffix “-sous-Montfort” ( -unter [the] Montfort ) indicates an early connection to the medieval hilltop castle Montfort in La Neuveville-sous-Montfort, seven kilometers south-east . The church of St. Martin belonged to the deanery of Porsas in the diocese of Toul. The priory next to the church was the seat of a hospice association of the Premonstratensians from 1668, dependent on the Molesme Abbey . The priory was founded in 1662 by Joachim Vaultrin .

Population development

In 1831 there were still 437 inhabitants in the municipality. The emigration due to the mechanization of agriculture and the two world wars caused the population to drop noticeably.
