Vioménil is a French commune with 145 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Neufchâteau and the canton Le Val-d'Ajol .

Location of the commune of Vioménil in the Vosges department

Vioménil is twelve kilometers east of Darney in the highest part of the Vôge plateau , the oldest part of the Vosges in terms of settlement. The Ménamont (467 m) is one of the highest peaks of the Monts Faucilles mountain range . The Saône and the Madon rise at its foot . The municipality is thus on the great European main watershed .

Neighboring municipalities of Vioménil are Escles in the north, Charmois-l'Orgueilleux in the east, Harsault in the southeast, La Haye in the south, Hennezel in the southwest and Belrupt in the west.

history

  • For the Romans, Viamansalis was a transit point on the way through the Saône valley.
  • In the 16th century, glassmakers came from Bohemia and built various forest glassworks , whose rock caves can still be seen today.
